AN INDEPENDENT CULTURAL HISTORY PROJECT

This history was made. Now it needs to be saved.

Preserving the stories, images, media, and cultural legacy of women who remade surf, skate, and snow.

Remember the stories

Wahinestory is building a digital archive to recover and preserve the artifacts of a culture women created on their own terms. Much of the evidence has fallen into a technological crevice between print and the internet. Your support will help us restore and safeguard these artifacts and make them accessible to future generations.

Discover the archive

Beginning in the mid-1990s, women began documenting their own stories in surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding through independent magazines. These projects captured a movement that encompassed not only women-led media, but brands, businesses, and communities that changed the culture. That’s where wahinestory begins.

Help us build it

The wahinestory archive brings together rare magazines, photographs and video, original documents, personal collections, and firsthand accounts. Stories from the pre-desktop publishing era provide context, and we'll continue to document our experiences by covering what's happening now in women's surfing and action sports. Our goal is to tell the entire story and make it available online.
